Why Aaron Rodgers Loses Because of The NFL Lockout

The NFL lockout could end next month or next year. No matter when it concludes, however, the Green Bay Packers have already canceled one of their most successful off-season events, “quarterback school”.

Mike McCarthy’s renowned “quarterback school,” an intensive and top-secret program designed to give his most important players a head start on the season, has come and gone with the NFL lockout. Although it is possible that a truncated version could be revived if the lockout ends soon, McCarthy already lamented its demise last week at the NFL owners meeting.

“To me, March is the most important time of year for a young quarterback,” McCarthy said. “March and April, I’ve always felt, is when you get your individual improvement. That opportunity has obviously gone by the wayside.”

When asked what happens at his quarterback school, McCarthy smiled and said, “That’s top-secret stuff, man” before emphasizing that he follows all of the NFL’s offseason rules for offseason player participation.  The concept began when he started as an NFL assistant in the early 1990′s, McCarthy said.

“Particularly in the old days, you draft a young quarterback and he goes and sits in a corner and he takes all the notes,” he said. “Then all of a sudden you get to [the next] March, and they say, ‘You know, I didn’t want to ask a question in front of the other guys but I never knew what the hell you were talking about.’ So and you’re like, ‘I just spent a year with this guy and he doesn’t know the base protections.’ That was a big moment for me personally when I was a position coach.”

So on the first day of quarterback school, the Packers “go back to page one,” McCarthy said. That means reviewing how to call for a huddle and moving from there. In recent years, McCarthy asked Rodgers to present some of the information as a way to mix it up and keep things interesting for a veteran group.

“Each year, as he goes through it, you try to eliminate some of the redundancies,” McCarthy said, “but it’s to give those young quarterbacks that chance to go back to square one every year. You learn the base protections, all the adjustments, I’ve been in the same offense since 1989, and I still learn something new each year. You’re never too experienced or been in it long enough to not find a better way this year.

“Because today’s game, it’s just a big circle. The NFL is just a circle of adjustments, whether it’s the 3-4, or whether it’s the 4-3, whether you’re spreading them out or running the ball. You really don’t run new plays. There are so many great coaches and players that have come before us and you’re just reinventing the stuff that have been done over history. You try to stay one step ahead of your opponents.”

In McCarthy’s world, the quickest way to that point is to have multiple quarterbacks who know what they’re doing. The Packers should have that this year with or without a quarterback school. But as with the case of the Minnesota Vikings’ pre-draft minicamp, the lockout has already eliminated an opportunity for further progress.

The Vince Lombardi Trophy is Going Home!

Super Bowl XLV marks a memorial point in history for the Green Bay Packers in 2011.  They are bringing the Vince Lombardi Trophy home for only the fourth time in history.

In what can best be described as a long and nail-biting Super Bowl game, the Green Bay Packers took the Pittsburgh Steelers 31 to 25.  Even after being penalized in excess of 70 yards in the second half, the Packers were able to regain their composure and make their mark in history.  There’s a lot to tell, and a lot to discuss, but I will leave that up to the news and media sources.  They will have their version of all the details, and I am certain a lot of player accounts of their version of the game as well.

Congratulations to the

Green Bay Packers!

Packers vs. Bears Rivalry

The Packers-Bears rivalry began in 1921 and has grown to be the league’s longest rivalry with 178 regular season and post season matches.

The Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Bears have won a combined 21 NFL Championships (including 4 Super Bowls) and have 48 members in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

In week 1 of the 2009 NFL season, the Packers defeated the Bears at Lambeau Field 21-15.  With its win in the season opener, Green Bay narrowed Chicago’s lead in the series to a 81-90-6 advantage.

For the Packers, the late-season trip to Chicago is getting to be routine. Sunday marks the sixth consecutive year the Packers will play in Chicago in December or later.  And though they’ve lost two consecutive games at Soldier Field, both in frigid conditions, the Packers have still won 12 of the last 16 meetings in the Windy City.

Sunday marks the final 2009 division game for the Packers; reeling off four consecutive victories, while Chicago has dropped six of its last eight games.  The roles are nearly reversed from last December’s match-up, when Green Bay entered the game with slim playoff chances and hoped to knock its rival a step back in the playoff picture.

At 8-4, Green Bay and Philadelphia currently hold the top positions for Wild Card berths, while the Dallas Cowboys (8-4) and New York Giants (7-5) both could be in that position as the NFC East picture clears up. Dallas will step out of the division to take on the San Diego Chargers, while the Eagles and Giants meet on Sunday night in New York.

Aaron Rodgers

As a projected first-round draft pick in 2005, quarterback Aaron Rodgers felt that his ability to scramble, get out of the pocket, and pick up yardage running if needed was an overlooked part of his game — which nobody is overlooking anymore…

Rodgers not only leads all NFL quarterbacks in 2009 with 277 rushing yards, but he showed last Monday night against Baltimore just how dangerous he can be when given room to run.  Rodgers’ 30 total rushing yards against the Ravens gave him four games this season with 30 or more, including a career-high 52 against Minnesota on Nov. 1. He has proven adept at running out of trouble as well as running the quarterback sneak, scoring a pivotal touchdown on a sneak against Dallas in Week 10 and gaining 5 yards on a third-and-1 sneak last Monday when he spun into an opening on the right side.

Just what week 14 holds in store for the Packers vs. Bears Rivalry may or may not be predictable, but I’m going with the Green Bay Packers!

GO PACK!
